To get the ride in the bus, street car, subway, ferry or to use other means of mass transportation you have to have money or proper ticket in your pocket. Everybody using mass transportation system knows frustrations of lineups, lost tickets, expired tickets, no enough change in the pocket, hustle when trying to pay to the driver, get change back, move forward...

Answer to the most of above troubles is ticket that you can use multiple times, re-charge it with value when needed and just re-use it again and again. If you could use same card with stored value in other places that would be even better! Many cities around the world switched to tickets like that and enjoy many benefits of fare system. Millions of passengers using such systems every day are proof of acceptance and can verify how practical that actually is.

Only one kind of fare ticket can do that and much more. It is a smart card. It usually comes in form of the contact or contactless plastic card with chip inside. THE CONCEPT

Usage of the system is quite simple:

PASSENGER - will buy a smart card ticket at ticketing office or wherever transportation company sells the tickets. Same card can be re-charged thousands of times by adding a value to the ticket. Card can be contact type or contactless type.

If flat fee system is used it can be number of rides, simply amount paid in advance or in case of the monthly pass it can be expiry date. Since smart card systems support portable SC (Smart Card) devices and offline transactions it is possible to run re-charge office out of the pocket using portable SC terminal.

Passenger enters the bus at door #1 (driver's position), taps a smart ticket to the terminal (contactless cards). Terminal processes the card, verifies it, charges a predetermined amount or checks against expiry date, beeps to confirm the fare and that's it. It takes about second for all that. Fare is logged into internal log and process can be repeated again.

BUS - In case of smaller fare systems 3 different types of terminals to charge for ride can be used.

BUS COMPANY - Fare system can be as small or as big as operator needs it to be. What that practically means? Operator with few buses can have everything running literally out of the pocket. Cards could be issued using pocket or portable terminal, re-charged by same and again same kind of the terminal could be used in the bus to charge for ride. There is no PC, no reports, no special management, no software outside the actual smart cards and terminals. Still security is high level, uncompromised.

More elaborate system would have back office software package with central data base, POS (Point Of Sale) locations, bus validators, fee computers at driver's position, contactless smart cards based on MIFARE chip, download to the central server, blacklists for the lost or stolen cards.
